PERRY MASON

Perry Mason foi uma série que se tornou um autêntico clássico da história da TV mundial, apresentado originalmente nos Estados Unidos, pela rede CBS, entre 21 de setembro de 1957 a 22 de maio de 1966, num total de 271 episódios, de 60 minutos aproximadamente cada.

 O espetáculo se manteve no ar durante nove temporadas consecutivas e se converteu num símbolo em abordar temas legais e de mistério. No Brasil, a série começou a ser exibida pela TV Record, no fim da década de 60, também com grande sucesso.

Pouco tempo depois da primeira exibição, a série se converteu em grande favoritismo do público norte-americano e também do mundo inteiro. Os títulos de crédito, no início de cada capítulo, eram acompanhados por um excelente tema musical com grande influência de jazz composta por Fred Steiner e lembrada por muitos até os dias atuais.

As histórias eram baseadas nos personagens criados por Erle Stanley Gardner, um advogado que já havia escrito um par de best-sellers, e que utilizava o personagem Perry Mason em númeras peças de ficção policial. Perry Mason apareceu em mais de 80 obras do autor, onde a maioria dos quais tinham uma história envolvendo o seu cliente que estava sendo levado a julgamento por assassinato.

O personagem acabou também vindo para o cinema e data de 1934 o primeiro filme onde o personagem Perry Mason aparece, interpretado pelo ator Warren William e Helen Trenholme como Della Street, no filme “The Case of the Howling Dog”.

No ano seguinte, o personagem de Perry Mason também foi estrelado por Warren William e apareceu no filme “The Case of the Curious Bride”, de 1935, que curiosamente tinha o famoso ator Errol Flynn, em início de carreira, fazendo o papel do cadáver, onde ele aparecia num breve “flashback”.

Warren William interpretaria Mason em mais dois filmes: “The Case of the Lucky Legs” de 1935 e em “The Case of the Velvet Claws, de 1936. Nesse mesmo ano surgiu um outro filme denominado “The Case fo the Black Cat”, onde o personagem Perry Mason era interpretado por Ricardo Cortes e June Travis como Della Street.

Um ano mais tarde, em 1937, foi a vez Donald Wood interpretar Perry Mason em “The Case of the Sturthering Bishop” e finalmente “Granny Get You Gun”, que foi um filme baseado em “The Case of the Dangerous Dowager”, mas curiosamente não continha o personagem Perry Mason ou qualquer outro semelhante.

Na década de 40, o personagem Perry Mason acabou sendo adaptada para a rádio e transmitido pela CBS Radio, entre 18 de outubro de 1943 a 30 de dezembro de 1955, num total de 3000 episódios, de aproximadamente 15 minutos cada, debaixo do título de “Edge of Night” e não como Perry Mason, e teve a duração de doze temporadas.

Vários foram os atores representaram o personagem Perry Mason na rádio. O primeiro a interpretar foi Bartlett Robinson, seguido de Santos Ortega e Donald Briggs. O último a interpretar o personagem na rádio foi John Larkin e outros personagens como de Della Street foram interpretadas por Gertrude Warner, Jan Miner e Joan Alexander. A figura de Paul Drake por Matt Crowley e Charles Webster e a do Tenente Tragg por Frank Dane e depois por Mandel Kramer.

Após o encerramento do programa de rádio, o personagem Perry Mason acabou vindo para a televisão e onde diversos casos narrados na rádio, também foram adaptados para o espetáculo televisivo.

O programa foi desenvolvido pela Paisano Productions, através dos produtores executivos Gail Patrick Jackson e Thomas Cornwall Jackson, e estrelado pelo ator Raymond Burr, no papel principal de Perry Mason, juntamente com outros atores que faziam o elenco de apoio.

Basicamente a série contava em cada capítulo, um caso de homicídio, onde alguém inocente era acusado falsamente e recorria aos serviços de Perry Mason, um hábil advogado penal, para sua defesa. Praticamente durante até a metade do episódio, a ação transcorria na corte.

No último momento, uma prova fundamental, ou uma testemunha irrefutável surgia para desvendar o mistério. O criminoso, diante dessa última prova, sucumbia e confessava a autoria do crime, diante de um auditório atônito.

Perry Mason transformava cada interrogatório em um verdadeiro show, dotando-os de espetacularidade e intriga. Ao final, como na maioria dos filmes americanos de mistério, o culpado resultava sempre em ser o menos suspeito.

Perry Mason contava também com a ajuda de outros personagens secundários, como sua fiel secretária Della Street, interpretada pela atriz Barbara Hale e de seu investigador particular, o incorruptível Paul Drake, protagonizado pelo ator William Hooper.

Algum deles, ou às vezes ambos, apareciam no último momento com novo dado, uma carta, uma testemunha que servia para desvendar o caso judicial.

Havia também no elenco o representante da polícia o Tenente Tragg que era interpretado por Ray Collins. O personagem Perry Mason, talvez seja um dos poucos advogados “queridos” pelo público norte americano, já que nos Estados Unidos, os advogados possuem muita má fama e são chamados vulgarmente de “Aves Negras”.

Do outro lado estava o seu oponente o promotor Burger Hamilton, interpretado também magnificamente por William Talman, que apesar de não ganhar praticamente nenhum caso jurídico contra Mason, conservava seu posto durante várias temporadas. Cabe assinalar que em somente numa ocasião Perry Mason perdeu um caso jurídico e isso aconteceu no episódio “O caso do veridicto mortal”.

Perry Mason foi interpretado tão perfeitamente e memoravelmente que, dificilmente se podia imaginar outro ator para representar tal papel. Apesar desta forte identificação com o público, depois do cancelamento da série, Raymond Burr foi convocado para interpretar outra séria chamada “Ironside”, também de grande sucesso, que se manteve por oito anos através da cadeia NBC. Não obstante para o público Raymond Burr sempre seria Perry Mason.

Durante a década de 70 a rede CBS voltou a produzir novamente a série Perry Mason, mas como Raymond Burr estava rodando neste momento a série “Ironside”, foi escolhido o ator Monte Markham para protagonizar o famoso advogado. Nenhum integrante do elenco original foi convocado para este remake, que se tornou um grande fracasso, como a maioria dos espetáculos reavivados.

Este novo espetáculo recebeu a denominação de “The New Adventures of Perry Mason”, com roteiros de Ernie Frankel e do próprio criador do personagem Erle Stanley Gardner, produzido pela 20th Century Fox Television e foi apresentado pela rede CBS, entre 16 de setembro de 1973 a 20 de janeiro de 1974, num total de 15 episódios, de aproximadamente 60 minutos cada, numa só temporada.

O personagem Perry Mason se transformou num grande sucesso nos livros, na rádio, e em especial na televisão, mas nunca chegou a fazer sucesso nas histórias em quadrinhos. As primeiras aparições de Mason nos quadrinhos que se tem notícia datam da década de 40, em dois temas de David McKay pela Features Books: “Perry Mason: The Case of the Lucky Legs”, de 1946, baseada na obra de Erle Stanley Gardner de 1934 e “Perry Mason: The Case fo the Shoplifter´s Shoe”, de 1947, baseado numa obra de Gardner de 1938;

Alguns anos mais tarde, uma nova tentativa de trazer Perry Mason para as páginas dos quadrinhos de jornais, mas o resultado também se mostrou insatisfatório. Elas eram desenhadas por Mel Keefer e Lofgren Charles e era muito difícil adaptar os processos judiciais nos quadrinhos, mas assim mesmo durou cerca de dois anos, entre 16 de outubro de 1950 a 21 de junho de 1952.

Durante a década de 60 circularam também revistas pela Dell Comics e em 1989, uma comic strip collections denominada "Four Cases of Murder" foi lançada em 1989, pela Malibu. O sucesso da série Perry Mason acabou também gerando um série de produtos e entre eles se detacam alguns jogos para o público infanto-juvenil, entre outras.

Novamente na década de 80, o ator Raymond Burr foi convidado, agora pela NBC, para rodar um telefilme denominado “Perry Mason Returns”, na qual também contou com a participação da atriz Barbara Hale, revivendo novamente a personagem Della Street.

Quem não pode estar presente foi William Hooper, pois ele já havia falecido anos atrás, por isso foi chamado o ator William Katt, filho na vida real de Barbara Hale, para interpretar o papel do investigador Paul Drake.

Este telefilme foi muito sucedido e aceito pelo público, o que impulsionou os produtores Dean Hargrove e Fred Silverman, a reavivar o personagem de Perry Mason, juntamente com as duas estrelas sobreviventes, Raymond Burr e Barbara Hale. A partir de então foram produzidos diversos telefilmes que continuaram até a morte de Raymond, em 1993.

Depois da morte de Raymond Burr, o título dos telefilmes foi mudado para “The Perry Mason Mystery”, estrelado por Paul Sorvino, como Anthony Caruso e Hal Holbrook no papel de “Wild Bill” McKenzie, dois advogados e amigos de Mason, e Barbara Hale que continuou seu papel como Della Street, enquanto Mason era tido como estando fora da cidade a trabalho.

Durante as nove temporadas da série original de televisão Perry Mason, a mesma recebeu três prêmios Emmy entre os quais se destacam: um prêmio Emmy para melhor ator dramático para Raymond Burr, no ano de 1958 e outra em 1960, e outro Emmy de melhor atriz em séries dramáticas para Bárbara Hale, em 1958.

 série original de televisão foi também apresentada por muitos anos em syndicated, nos Estados Unidos, pelas televisões locais e mais recentemente pela TBS. A partir de 2006, diversos volumes em DVDs foram lançados mostrando diversos episódios da série original, através da CBS DVD e distribuídas nos Estados Unidos pela Paramount.

Raymond Burr nasceu como Raymond Burr William no dia 21 de maio de 1917, em New Estminster, Columbia Britânica, no Canadá e depois que seus pais se divorciaram ele se mudou para Califórnia, junto com sua mãe e irmãos.

Trabalhou na fazenda e também como vendedor para ajudar a sustentar sua família. Mais tarde entrou para a Marinha durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial e voltou após ser ferido no estômago, na cidade de Okinawa, Japão.

Iniciou sua carreira artística em 1937 fazendo teatro e depois passou a participar de diversos filmes. Também trabalhou na rádio por um tempo e depois veio para a televisão onde começou a participar de vários seriados. Na década de 50 tornou-se mundialmente famoso ao interpretar o personagem Perry Mason na televisão.

Depois voltou a fazer sucesso com outra série chamada Ironside na década de 70. Durante os anos 70, também trabalhou como porta-voz para a extinta Britsh Columbia, até o início da década de 80. Em 1985, voltou novamente a protagonizar uma série de telefilmes para a NBC.

Raymond Burr era homossexual, mas escondeu isso praticamente a vida inteira para não prejudicar sua carreira. Até mesmo seus amigos mais íntimos do trabalho não sabiam de sua homossexualidade e na década de 50 surgiram até rumores de um suposto romance como Natalie Wood.

Em sua biografia oficial, Burr alegou ter sido casado por três vezes e que tivera um filho que morrera, mas não existe nenhum relato sobre sua existência ou morte. Nos anos 50 conheceu o ator Robert Benevides com quem manteve um escondido romance até a sua morte, assim como Raymond deixou grande parte de sua herança para ele.

Em vida Raymond foi um grande filantropo e patrocinou diversas campanhas em prol das crianças e carentes. Em 1992 foi diagnosticado como tendo câncer em seu rim esquerdo, mas se negou a submeter a uma cirurgia para não atrapalhar as gravações do telefilme.

O câncer se espalhou para o resto do corpo e Raymond Burr morreu no dia 12 de setembro de 1993, em sua fazenda na Califórnia, aos 76 anos de idade e foi enterrado junto aos seus pais no Canadá.

Barbara Hale nasceu no dia 18 de abril de 1922, em Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos, de ascendência escocesa e Irlandesa, e iniciou sua carreira como modelo para pagar seus estudos. Em 1943, mudou-se para Hollywood e começou a participar de filmes, muitas vezes sem ser creditada.

Nos anos 40, conseguiu um contrato com RKO Radio Pictures e começou a ter destaque trabalhando ao lado de pessoas famosas como Robert Young, Charlton Heston e Dean Martin, entre outros.

Mas, o sucesso internacional chegou somente quando começou a participar da série de televisão Perry Mason, ao lado Raymond Burr, interpretando a personagem Della Street, entre 1957 a 1966 e depois em vários telefilmes até 1995.

Barbara foi casada com o ator Bill Williams entre 1946 até a morte dele em 1992, de câncer. Desse casamento nasceram duas filhas e um filho, William Katt, que mais tarde também se tornaria ator. Os dois contracenaram em diversos episódios de Perry Mason e também num episódio de “The Greatest American Hero”.

Após a morte de seu marido Bill Williams, em 1992, Barbara continuou a cuidar dos filhos e netos, e continuou seu trabalho. Sua última apresentação ocorreu em 2000, aos 78 anos de idade. Depois se aposentou e atualmente é seguida da Bahái Faith.

Em toda sua carreira ganhou um Emmy Award em 1959 e uma indicação ao mesmo prêmio em 1961. Por sua contribuição à indústria do entretenimento recebeu uma estrela na famosa calçada em Hollywood Walk of Fame.

William Hopper nasceu como William DeWolf Hopper, Jr. na Cidade de Nova Iorque, Estados Unidos, no dia 26 de janeiro de 1915 e é filho do ator DeWolf Hopper e da atriz e colunista Hedda Hopper.

Iniciou sua carreira, ainda adolescente fazendo teatro nos anos 30 e aos poucos foi conseguindo seu papel dentro do cinema, trabalhando ao lado de nomes como Ann Sheridan, Claire Trevor, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, entre outros, em diversos filmes da década de 30 e 40.

Em 1940, casou-se com a atriz Jane Gilbert com teve uma filha em 1942 e se divorciou no início dos anos 60. Pouco tempo depois se casou novamente com Jeanette J. Hooper com quem viveu até a sua morte.

Ficou famoso internacionalmente ao protagonizar o personagem Paul Drake na série de televisão Perry Mason, entre 1957 a 1966, ao lado Raymond Burr e Barbara Hale, e em 1959 recebeu uma indicação ao Emmy Award como Melhor Ator Coadjuvante, por seu papel como Paul Drake.

Após o encerramento da série Perry Mason, ele praticamente se aposentou, mas fez uma pequena aparição em 1970, interpretando o juiz Frederic D. Cannon em “Gore Vidal´s Myra Breckinnridge”. Nesse mesmo ano foi hospitalizado com uma pneumonia avançada e morreu no dia 6 de março de 1970, aos 52 anos de idade, e foi enterrado no Rose Hills Memorial Park, em Whittier, Califórnia, Estados Unidos.

William Talman nasceu como William Whitney Talman, Jr. no dia 4 de fevereiro de 1915, em Detroit, Michigan, Estados Unidos, filho de um vice-presidente de uma empresa de eletrônicos e seus avós eram imigrantes da Inglaterra.

Fundou um clube de teatro em Michigan e continuou a atuar na escola. Após o término da faculdade trabalhou como vendedor de automóveis e serviu no exército durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Depois da guerra, na década de 50 iniciou seus trabalhos Broadway e depois em filmes e televisão, onde se consagrou trabalhando no seriado Perry Mason. Ele se casou por três vezes, a primeira como a atriz Lynne Carter, entre 1942 a 1952, com quem teve uma filha. Depois casou com a atriz Barbara Read e tiveram dois filhos.

Divorciou-se de Barbara em 1960 e três anos depois casou novamente com Margaret Flanagan com teve dois filhos. William era um fumador inveterado e foi diagnosticado posteriormente com câncer no pulmão. Ele sabia que ia morrer por causa da doença e foi o primeiro ator de Hollywood a filmar um comercial contra o tabagismo para a American Câncer Society, nos Estados Unidos.

Nesse comercial William dizia: “Antes de morrer eu quero fazer o que eu posso para deixar o mundo livre do câncer para os meus filhos....” e solicitou que o comercial fosse exibido até depois de sua morte. Quatro semanas depois, William Talma morreu, no dia 30 de agosto de 1968, aos 53 anos de idade.

Ray Collins nasceu como Ray Birdwell Collins no dia 10 de dezembro de 1889, em Sacramento, Califórnia, Estados Unidos e era filho de um editor de jornal. Iniciou sua carreira aos quatorze anos de idade, em meados dos anos 30 com Orson Welles no teatro, interpretando papéis memoráveis.

Mais tarde, juntamente com outros atores da Mercury Theatre, fez sua primeira aparição no cinema no filme “Citizen Kane”, depois não parou mais e em vida atuou em mais de 90 filmes.

Mas, apesar de tantos filmes importantes, ficou conhecido pelo seu trabalho na série de televisão Perry Mason, na década de 50 e 60, interpretando o Tenente Tragg. Suas últimas atuações datam de 1958 no filme “Touch of Evil”. Ray Collins morreu de enfisema, aos 75 anos de idade, no dia 11 de julho de 1965, em Santa Monica, Califórnia, Estados Unidos.
