THE OUTER LIMITS - QUINTA DIMENSÃO

Quinta Dimensão ou The Outer Limits foi uma série de antologia com um estilo muito similar a um outro seriado muito famoso “The Twilight Zone”, que narravam diversas histórias de ficção e fantasia. The Outer Limits foi criado por Leslie Stevens e também contou em seu projeto com Joseph Stefano (que também escreveu o roteiro de “Psicose”) e do diretor de fotografia Conrad Hall, para a rede ABC.

Cada episódio do programa era uma história autoconclusiva, como outros similares, mas que tinha como diferencial o fato de narrar histórias de ficção científica de profunda autenticidade, e não apenas mera narração de fantasias ou terror. Ela era baseada em relatos sobrenaturais que foram divulgadas em algum tempo, por algum meio de divulgação ou comunicação.

Cada episódio iniciava com uma narração (originalmente por Vic Perrin) por uma pessoa que se identificava apenas como “Control Voice”, projetada sobre um visual de um osciloscópio. A narração dizia: “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits.”.

Uma versão em português era apresentada mais ou menos nestes termos: “Não há nada de errado com seu televisor. Não tente ajustar a imagem. Nós estamos controlando esta transmissão. Se nós desejarmos deixar o volume mais alto, nós exporemos o volume. Se nós desejarmos deixar mais branda, nós afinaremos isto a um sussurro. Nós controlaremos o horizontal. Nós controlaremos o vertical. Nós podemos mexer a imagem, fazendo-o tremular. Nós podemos mudar o foco para escurecer ou deixar com uma claridade cristalina. Durante a próxima hora, acomode-se tranquilamente que nós controlaremos tudo aquilo que você ouve ou vê. Nós repetimos, não há nada de errado com o seu televisor. Você está a ponto de participar de uma grande aventura. Você está a ponto de experimentar o temor e mistério para as quais a sua mente alcançará...The Outer Limits (Os Limites Exteriores)”.

Muitos episódios usavam uma das duas versões existentes desta introdução. O espetáculo foi apresentado originalmente nos Estados Unidos pela rede ABC, entre 16 de setembro de 1963 a 16 de janeiro de 1965, num total de 49 episódios, de aproximadamente 60 minutos cada, todos eles em branco e preto, e atualmente a série é considerada como “cult”.

No Brasil esta série é também conhecida como “Quinta Dimensão” e foi exibido pela Rede Globo, MGM, USA Channel, em diferentes épocas. O seriado foi premiado em 1966 com o prêmio Writers Guild of America para o escritor, roteirista Harlan Ellison, pelo episódio “Demon with a Glass Hand”.

Mais recentemente, a série foi novamente reeditada com o mesmo título e apresentada nos Estados Unidos, inicialmente pelo canal a cabo Showtime e depois terminou passando pela Sci-Fi Channel. O seriado foi exibido entre 26 de março de 1995 a 18 de janeiro de 2002, num total de 154 episódios, de aproximadamente 45 minutos cada, em sete temporadas.

TRILHA DE ABERTURA 1995:

O novo seriado foi filmada em Vancouver, British Columbia, no Canadá e contou com histórias escritas por Harlan Ellison, Eando Binder, Larry Niven, Richard Matherson, Stephen King, entre outros grandes nomes da literatura de ficção. Este espetáculo continha mais violência e sexo, incluindo a nudez feminina ocasionalmente.

Ela também continha um arco histórico baseado em forças subjacentes quase misteriosas ou extraterrestres, enquanto incluíam enredos em aberto que eram relacionados a um ou outro “clipe show” ao término da temporada. Em todas as temporadas havia um “clip show” que entrelaçava os diversos enredos dos episódios.

A cada intervalo comercial, a “Control Voice” repetia frases como “The Outer Limits.... please standy by” no retorno dos anúncios da televisão. A imagem surrealista da abertura foi desenvolvida principalmente por Jerry Uelsmann.
